Shipments of Android phones have been growing like crazy. Now it’s said that Android will be shipping 1 billion smartphones annually by 2017. Now that seems like quite a ways away, but keep in mind that only 470 million android smartphones shipped last year. According to Market research firm Canalys, they reported yesterday their forecast for smartphones for the next five years. Android is obviously the big winner here.
In 2017, the 1 billion Android shipments will account for 67.1% of the 1.5 billion smartphones that sell into channels globally. Which is down a bit from the 67.7% of the market Android controlled last year. Of course, Google well Android won’t really notice the difference. More importantly, Apple won’t be noticing the difference.
According to Canalys, Apple’s share of the global smartphone market will drop from 19.5% in 2012 to the 14.1% in 2017 which is about 200 million smartphones. Microsoft’s share is said to increase to 12.7% in 2017 from 2.4% in 2012. Blackberry is expected to go from 4.8% in 2012 to 4.6% in 2017. So if these analysts are right, BlackBerry won’t be going away anytime soon.
These numbers really aren’t surprising, we know that Android is going to continue to grow, but I don’t think Android will be growing at the same rate it has the last couple of years. Android is eventually going to plateau, but Android is definitely not going anywhere.
It is pretty surprising to see Microsoft’s share grow to 12.7% by 2017, especially since their market share is almost non-existent right now.
