At CTIA 2013, TechRadar had a chance to sit down with HTC’s Senior Global Online Communications Manager Jeff Gordon to discuss some of the hot topics surrounding the company’s flagship One.
The lack of a microSD card slot in the U.S. and UK was a contentious issue for many when deciding whether to purchase the HTC One, especially considering that both the China and Japan versions shipped with the option for extra storage. It was always likely that this topic would be brought up during the interview, and now we finally have an answer as to why microSD support was left out. It seems that the issue boils down to space:
>>Because the Chinese version of the One is designed specifically for the smaller Chinese radio bands, we do have additional space inside the device we were able to use for the microSD slot. That space isn't available to us in the global version.
So there we have it, there simply isn’t enough room inside the U.S. and UK versions of the HTC One to fit a microSD slot.
Also, many of us are still curious why the HTC One is missing from Verizon’s network, but when questioned about it Gordon didn’t really have very much to say.
>>It's always a great thing to have our phones on as many operators as possible, but we've got nothing to announce in terms of Verizon.
That's a frustratingly vague response no doubt. It’s possible that Verizon wanted its own version of the HTC One, or made some other demands which simply made the deal an unattractive prospect for HTC. Verizon has sold various HTC products in the past, so there must have been something significant to prevent a deal for HTC’s new flagship device.
Unfortunately, Gordon wasn’t forthcoming with any resolutions for these issues, but at least now we have an explanation for some of HTC’s recent decisions.
